Malachite – The Keeper of the Clean

Malachite is a dark green stone commonly found with light green bands in it. It is a powerful stone that clears toxins on mainly the emotional and mental levels and therefore by default the physical body. It is known to release stress caused by the burdens of life and commonly re-orients the user or wearer to a path more in alignment with themselves.

This stone has always been used in healing as its effects are powerful when it resonates with the wearer. Commonly worn by healers during their training process under a supervised learning experience will facilitate a quick shedding of the toxic energy and mental bodies.

This stone is known as the Keeper of the Clean because of the aforesaid clearing abilities of this stone. It is also known to keep nightmares away, and is extremely effective when combined with the dream catcher, where it was oft seen in the past.

Peoples past used this stone as a gateway into the heart and all the information stored there. They would use the stone in hand with a sweeping motion along the body to “clear” away anything no longer serving the person, especially in cases of the heart.

Malachite loves to be placed on ones chest and have its energies worked with via the breath. An old meditation technique used before was to place a piece of Malachite on the heart and imagine breathing in green light. On the out breath see everything the green light is transmuting leave.

Try it and see why this stone is the Keeper of the Clean.

It is recommended to do this meditation for ten days for ten minutes a day.

This stone loves all forms of breath work. Try it, and be creative.

Historic Uses

Often worn in ancient Egypt, like Lapis Lazuli was, crushed into a powder and put on the eyes, Malachite was devoted to the Goddess Hathor. Since that time, and possibly before, Malachite has well been known to protect children from danger, bad dreams, and evil. It helps pregnant women by facilitating labour.

The Upper Class of Egypt used this mineral to bring forth their inner wisdom, sometimes lining their head pieces with malachite.

It was used frequently in amulets and necklaces: set in a white metal (silver or platinum) it was believed to draw attention to oneself and make one charming and attractive, while malachite beads were used with the belief that malachite breaks to warn the wearer of impending danger, it always guards against negativity, and will open the heart more when worn near the heart.

In Russia it was believed that working with Malachite will allow the user to speak with animals.

In the Healing World

Malachite is known to clear past traumas and to open the heart to unconditional love. It helps in all interpersonal relationships by helping the wearer to witness and break old patterns as well as to open up to the possibilities of the Universe.

One is cautioned when working with this stone as it sometimes has been called “The Mirror of the Soul” because it has a tendency to help one to notice the reflections that one is creating in the world. This allows the pattern or belief or thought to be brought into conscious awareness and then released.

Whatever state of mind you are in when working with this stone will seem amplified.

Malachite will help to enhance harmony and balance in relationships with others. It is a stone that helps move through transitions in a calm and gentle way.

This stone is absorbs any negativity inside the aura, the body or the area around itself including any forms of electromagnetic radiation. (Now it makes sense why Malachite insists on the shelve above the TV in my room!)

Malachite is known to bring wisdom to the user, and spiritual guidance as it helps guides the wearer to understanding oneself and others. It can unblock all of the chakras by absorbing any of the energies that are no longer serving the highest good.

Note on Clearing Malachite:

This stone is very soft, rating a 3.5 or 4 on the Mohs scale. This means to be careful cleansing the stone, which is recommended to be done on a frequent basis, and to stay away from the use of salt, and keep the stone away from sunlight so it can retain its lovely colour and shine.

With the Gods

Lapis Lazuli has strong ties to both royalty and the Gods and Goddesses of various societies. Often it was though tin the past that members of Royalty were directly connected to the numerous Gods and Goddess and Lazuli was thought to help facilitate that connection. It was worn by many of the rich and ruling classes, and has been found in many royal tombs including Tutankhamun’s.

It was a pricey stone that was highly sought after, but that didn’t stop a Sumerian Queen from dressing in a robe of Lapis Lazuli and Gold. Can you imagine? How heavy was it do you think? In Sumeria, it was thought that Lapis contained the spirits of deities.

Ishtar travelled to the underworld wearing Lapis Lazuli, and the moon-god Sin, a powerful bull had a Lapis Lazuli beard. It was believed whomever carried the gem worked with the power of Sin.

King Solomon was given a Lapis Lazuli ring by an angel to control demons.

Egyptians highly regarded Lapis, saying it was the stone of Gods for two reasons: it reminded them of the heavens, but it also improved eyesight, when worn as an Eye of Horus amulet, or powdered around the eyes. In “The Book of the Dead” it is stated that Lapis cut in the shape of an eye, and set in gold is a powerful amulet.

Healing Properties

In the ancient world Lapis Lazuli was popular with alchemists. It could be used to cure sore throats. Albertus Magnus saw it as a cure for melancholy and quartern fever”. The ground powder could be mixed with milk and used to relieve ulcers and boils as a compress.

In the Middle Ages Lapis Lazuli was said to keep the skeleton in a healthy condition and keep the spirit free from fear and jealous for the dead, and for the living it would keep the body healthy and soul free from error, envy and fear.

In the 17th century it was used to prevent miscarriages, epilepsy and dementia.

Metaphysically it has often been believed that Lapis Lazuli can guide one to enlightenment and is an excellent purifier. It can aid in the opening of the third eye, and will give the user success, Divine favor, and ancient wisdom.

The Romans used Lapis Lazuli as an aphrodisiac, while in Ur, kings would sharpen their swords on it believing they would become invulnerable on the battlefield.

In The World and In Art

Lapis Lazuli often comes from Afghanistan, from some of the oldest continually worked set of mines in the world. Those same mines were supplying this stone to the pharaohs, and are several thousand years old.

Lapis was used for jewellery, amulets and talismans by the Greeks and Romans.

Ground up Lapis Lazuli was mixed with oil to produce ultramarine, which is used in the blues of the Renaissance paintings. It was very expensive, but beautiful, and this pigment has been made synthetically since 1828.

What an introduction, eh?

This is a new feature with a focus various legends and lore of the gemstones. I’ll be channelling pieces from the Akashic Records like the above piece with pieces of my research and experience following below. Enjoy! Let’s get down to the lore!

My Experience

My experience of moonstone has been powerful and long. I began working with this gemstone several years ago after I dreamed of an old druid-like man appearing in my room. He told me that moonstone would protect me, and to place small pieces above every door and window. It would only allow the good to enter, and nothing bad would be able to pass through.

The next day I bought several tumbled pieces of moonstone that have travelled with me since, almost always being placed above the doors and windows of the rooms I live in. That has been my main use of this stone, occasionally sitting and wearing the odd stone for its calming and intuitive presence.

Writing this blog post inspired me to begin wearing a large piece of moonstone that sits on my windowsill most days and to observe the changes in my life. I noticed immediately a shift: powerful loving energies swirling around my being providing protection, intuitive insights and grace; a grace allowing me to confidently stand in my feminine. Moonstone is a keeper.

Legend Has It

In India, in Vedic legend it is told a battle was fought between Lord Vishnu and Bali, the demon god. Vishnu destroyed Bali by breaking his body into several pieces, which fell to the earth as different jewels. Moonstone was formed from the gleam of Bali’s eyes.

It is believed that the finest blue moonstones are washed ashore by the tides every 21 years, when the sun and moon were in an astrologically harmonious aspect to each other.

Blue moonstone is the most coveted around the world out of all the various types of moonstone.

Romans believed that moonstone was formed by frozen moonlight because of the way it shimmers.

Amulets of moonstone were hung in fruit trees to produce abundance crops. The amulets were associated with the following Goddesses: Isis, Diana, and Selene.

Moon Uses

There is said to be a white mark on the moonstone that follows the cycle of the moon. As the moon waxes and wanes, so too does the mark on the stone. When the moon is waning the wearer would be able to foretell evens, and when the moon was waxing it was used as an effective love charm.

When the moon is full, it is said that a lover can predict the future of the relationship by placing the moonstone in the mouth.

There are cultures that use moonstone as an aphrodisiac, and legends in India and Europe that state two people will fall passionately in love when the moon is high if they wearing moonstone in any way.

When staring at a moonstone for a long uninterrupted period of time it is said to put the person into a trance or hypnotize them. During this time insights into the future will be gained.

It is said that within the moonstone lives a spirit full of good that can bring abundance, fertility, and calmness to the users.

In the Middle East women sew moonstones to their clothes when they want to conceive a child.

An elixir was traditionally made of crushed moonstone to help cure insomnia, and the stone was also used to treat sleepwalking.
